The data was based on questions from the subjects, and the questions were mainly about their periodontal health history. This data helped researchers to find out connection between periodontal health and the risk of cancer.

How periodontal disease can lead to cancer?

Now, it would be pretty normal for you to wonder about the reason for periodontal disease leading to cancer. It is mainly due to the fact that gum disease can allow infected blood to travel throughout the body. This infected blood can cause development and growth of cancerous cells anywhere in the body.

Link between gum disease and health problems

There are two types, better call them stages, of gum disease. The initial stage or first type of gum disease is gingivitis. Gingivitis affects 85% of the adult population. The second and severe type of gum disease is known as periodontitis and it affects 12% of American adults. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss but it doesn’t stop here. The infection can cause development and growth of other health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorder and cancer.

In case you are caught by gum disease, now you need to get it treated. For this purpose, the first thing your dentist will do is the cleaning of your teeth. The dentist is going to scrap hardened plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. Sometimes, the dentist may need to clean the plaque from the teeth’s area under the gum line. This cleaning is known as deep cleaning or root planing.

The consequences of gum disease can be quite disastrous. So, you have to make sure that you are not ignoring any symptoms which may give a signal that you are at the risk of developing gum disease. So, you need to visit the dentist as soon as you notice any sign.
